2008 Horse Show Rules

Changes Have Been Made Please Read (changes are in bold type)

  1. Prior to entering the arena, an original negative Coggins, for all horses brought on the grounds, must be presented at the entry stand.
  2. TLAFA membership is mandatory for riding in horse shows.  Membership is $10 for an individual or $30 for a family.  An individual under the age of 18 can only join with an adult family member. 
  3. There will be a $1.00 grounds charge for each horse brought onto grounds.
  4. All entries will be done at the entry stand only. You may not enter a class once it has started.
  5. A $25.00 fee must accompany any protest. Such fee shall be returned only if the protest is upheld in the favor of the person submitting the protest. All protests must be submitted immediately, in writing, and must be dated and signed by person filing the protest.
  6. Any prior financial obligation must be cleared through the office prior to showing at another show. Therefore all entries must be paid with cash or check. (checks of local banks only unless approved by the Entry Keeper or Horse Show Chairman) NSF check charge will be $20.00.  No tabs will be allowed unless a signed blank check is left with entry keeper.
  7. The Terrebonne Livestock and Agricultural Fair Association is not responsible for loss or damage to a person, horse, vehicle, horse trailer or personal belongings while on the show grounds or fair grounds.

8.   No glass bottles will be allowed on the show or fair grounds at anytime during a Horse Show. No alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the TLAFA grounds during a Horse Show.  No one drinking alcohol will be allowed to ride.

9.   In the event of an age discrepancy, proof of age to be shown with a birth certificate or drivers license.

10. Horse Shows are the first Sunday of each month starting in March and ending in November. We do not have a July horse show .   Call before you haul, Ray 991-1005 or Veronica 665-1005.    

11. The AQHA Rule Book will be used as a guide for all TLAFA Horse Shows.

12. Entry fee refunds for bad weather or injuries to rider or horse only. No refunds for scratching an event.

13. Riders may run horses through center alleyway to enter arena only. Riders must exit side gate at a  walk.

14. Any attempt by a rider to mock an association rule, display un-sportsman like conduct and/or mistreat their horse in the arena, will be considered an automatic disqualification for that event. If conduct persists the Horse Show Chairman reserves the right to disqualify that person for the remainder of the show/shows and have them removed from the TLAFA grounds. In judged events, the judge also reserves this right.

15. No vulgar or obscene language will be tolerated from spectators or riders. They will be asked to leave.

16. In order to speed up our shows the riding order will be called twice prior to the start of each class. If you are not in line at the back entrance to the alleyway when you are called to ride you will be scratched from the event. It is the participant's responsibility to have help with problem horses while you are in line waiting to ride. Also, if you break the pattern or  knock down a pole or barrel, you may finish the remainder of the pattern and exit the arena. You may not restart the pattern for practice. You may practice the pattern by paying an exhibition fee and running again last in the class.

17. Horse and Rider cannot be moved back in another class once that rider participates in the first Horse Show. After the fourth Horse Show, rider and horse cannot change classes for points.

  1. Horse riders will be placed ahead of anyone who is led by lead rope or other device. (with the exception of Lead Line Class).
  2. In the event of the death of a horse before the completion of 5 shows, the rider may compete on another horse in the remaining shows, in the same age division to hold their points for  the year end award.  However, only the points from the first horse will count, points from the two horses will not be combined.   Example:  Jane rides Sparky in the first 3 shows and has earned 70 points, Sparky dies.  Jane can decide whether to ride another horse to hold the 70 points on Sparky, or she can ride the new  horse in the remaining 5 shows and accumulate points on that horse only. 

21.  Equipment failure or rider falling off horse does not constitute a re-ride. If a horse broadsides during a run, a re-ride will be granted.

22.  Judged event points will be separate from the speed event points.

23.  Judged Events.

a)      Judged Event divisions will be:    (Ages as of 1/1/08)    Lead Line (ages 6 & under)                Peanut (ages 9 & under)   Youth (ages 17 and under)     Senior (ages 18 & over)

c)      Proper attire will be required for all the judged events. Attire for judged events will consist of long or short sleeve western shirts, boots, a western hat (sport laced riding tennis shoes are not allowed in judged events). Lace up ropers and slip on boots with heels are the only riding boots allowed, and chaps are optional. Proper equipment is required for all classes to ensure safety for everyone.

d)      Judged event points will not be used for speed event year-end award points.

e)      Lead Line class  be judged for points.  Rider must enter at least 5 shows  to be eligible for year end award.

f)        Peanut division riders will be competing for a buckle to be awarded at the end of the year.  Must participate in 5 shows on the same horse.

g)      The Youth and Senior judged division riders will be competing for a saddle to be awarded in each division at the end of the year. Award prizes will be given in each division for the top five contestants. You must participate in at least 5 shows on the same horse to be eligible for end of year awards. 

h)      Participation awards may be given to judged event riders who enter all 5  judged events on the same horse in at least 5 shows and who do not place in the top 5, year end points standings.

i)        Entry fee for judged events will be $5.00 for each event.

j)        Judges may be paid up to  $200.  Except in an emergency, all judges must be from out of the city limits of Houma. All judges decisions will be final!

k)      All judged event riders will use proper bit as stated in AQHA rule book.

l)        End of day ties will be settled by most 1st place ribbons, 2nd place ribbons, etc.  If still tied then settle by flip of coin.

m)    Year end tie will be settled as in (l).

b)      Speed Event points will not go toward Judged Events points.

c)      A saddle will be awarded in every division at the end of the show season. The top five contestants in each division will be awarded prizes at the end of the year. You must participate in at least 5 shows on the same horse to be eligible for end of year awards.

d)      Participation awards may be given to speed event riders who enter all 5 speed events in at least 5 shows on the same horse and who do not place in the top 5 year end points standings.

e)      The entry fee in the speed events will be $5.00 per event.

f)        Only riding boots or riding shoes with a heel will be allowed in the arena for speed events.

g)      TLAFA recommends that all speed event riders wear a helmet. Rider must provide their own helmet.

h)      Persons who enter speed events for practice purposes only will not be awarded points and they will be placed at the end of the riding order. If entering for practice please enter at the entry stand as an exhibition rider.

i)        Year-end tie will be settled by the rider with the most first place finishes, second place finishes, etc.

j)        End of day ties will be settled by ride-off or flip of coin. Rider who refuses to ride loses the tie.  In the event that the tie is broken between 5th and 6th place, the loser of the tie will be awarded one of the hit and miss awards.

  1. In order for points to count, for year-end awards, you must ride in at least 5 Horse Shows on the same horse.
  2. All year-end awards will be given out at the Annual Banquet.
  3. Points for all event awards are as follows:

5 or more riders in a class.               

·        1st = 7 points

·        2nd = 5 points

·        3rd = 4 points

·        4th = 3 points

·        5th = 2 point

4 riders in a class.

·        1st = 6 points

·        2nd = 4 points       

·        3rd = 3 points

·        4th = 2 points

3 riders in a class.

·        1st = 5 points

·        2nd = 3 points       

·        3rd = 2 points

2 riders in a class.

·        1st = 4 points

·        2nd = 2 points

1 rider in a class.

·        1st = 2 points

 All non-placers will be given 1 point.

 

  1. The top five contestants in each division in the judged and speed events will be awarded prizes, gift certificates or cash awards at the end of each show. (type of award to be determined by the Horseshow Chairman prior to each show).
  2. All contestants in each class who do not place in the top 5 end of day High Point Awards will be eligible for a Hit and Miss Award to be chosen at random from each class.
  3. Points for end of year awards will go to horse and rider. Rider cannot combine year end points from two different horses. No exceptions!!
  4. Horse Show points are not final until the last show is complete and the points are double-checked by the Horse Show Chairman and Entry Keeper and President of TLAFA.  If you notice any discrepancy, please call it to our attention right away.
  5. All contestants  will be obligated to earn 8 merit hours for the year.  A parent or delegate may earn these hours for the contestant, but when that person signs up they must state whose name they are working for.   To earn these hours, you may work an event (barrels, pole, etc), gate or concession stand.  One hour gets you one merit hour.  If you have not earned your merit hours by the last horse show there is a $50 fee in order to get your awards.

  MUCH THOUGHT AND CONSIDERATION HAS GONE INTO THE DRAFTING OF THESE RULES,  KEEPING  THE SAFETY AND FAIRNESS OF ALL PARTICIPANTS IN MIND.  

THESE RULES WILL BE UPHELD.
