TERREBONNE
LIVESTOCK & AGRICULTURAL FAIR ASSOCIATION is a non profit
organization founded on October 6th, 1947, to promote and preserve livestock and
agriculture in Terrebonne Parish. 200 plus members strong, the organization
is dedicated to supporting livestock related activities for folks of all
ages.
TLAFA leases and maintains the Agricultural facility and rodeo arena on the
Houma Air Base. These facilities are also offered free of charge to many non
profit organizations. Organizations that routinely use the facilities at no
cost are 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Just Say No, and Cerebral
Palsy. The Red Cross uses the facility as a distribution center during
emergencies.
TLAFA hosts eight HORSE SHOWS each year. These shows provide recreation and
competition for people of all ages. The shows attract riders from across
Southeast Louisiana. Most riders are children and teenagers. It is
family-oriented fun, which teaches sportsmanship, commitment, perseverance
and other values. The youngsters learn responsibility in caring for their
animals. They feed, water, groom, provide shelter and exercise them every
day. These are very wholesome activities and the
whole family generally enjoys and shares in these responsibilities.
Horse Show admission is free to spectators. Contestant event fees are
reasonable. Points are earned in each event, which are then used in awarding
prizes at the end of the day and at the end of the show year. Also, at the
end of the year, saddles are awarded to high point winners in certain age
groups in judged and speed events; buckles are awarded to 2nd through
5th place high point. Judged events usually start at 9:00 a.m. Speed events start after
judged events. There is always food and drink at these events. Call Ray
Allemand at 985-872-0024 for more details and information.
TLAFA has a Spring Series of three rodeos open to all contestants. Contestants
will compete for cash prizes and points that will be accumulated for awards to
be presented for each event at the end of the third rodeo. Contestants can
register beginning the Monday before the rodeo from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM.
TLAFA also has two more events during the year;
"Beauty & the Beast Bull Bash” and the "Annual Fall Rodeo.”
This last Rodeo is when we announce our new Rodeo
Queens for the next reigning year. The Queen's contest is held approximately
3 to 4 weeks prior to the rodeo.
TLAFA is proud of the “Cajun Cowgirls Drill Team” which performs at
our rodeos. The team is made up of young, local gals, with a Mom and maybe a
Grandma in the bunch. They practice regularly and work very hard.
This team is coached and directed by Christine Grems. They carry Sponsor
flags and other beautifully colored flags and perform many precision
routines during the rodeos and activities at the arena. If you are
interested in joining call Christine @ 985-872-5858; 665-0276; 872-5909.
TLAFA
sponsors rodeos during each year to raise money for awards given at the
horse shows, maintenance of the arena and other buildings, utilities and
insurance. These rodeos draw cowboys and cowgirls and their families from
all over Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.
If you would like to become a member of TLAFA, the cost is $10.00 per person or $30.00 per family per year.
